How do you build a website with online booking?

You can use an existing booking service, or build one around your own rules. The hard parts are never the form: they are availability, preventing two people from taking the same slot, confirmations, changes and who manages the calendar.

Booking looks simple until you list the rules. The calendar is the visible part; the logic behind it is the real project.

What a booking system has to get right

  • Availability. Working hours, breaks, days off, lead time, how long each service takes, and which person or resource is needed.
  • No double bookings. If two visitors click the same slot at once, only one gets it, and the other is told straight away. This needs care in the code and the database.
  • Confirmations and reminders by email or message.
  • Changes. Cancelling, moving, and what is allowed how close to the appointment.
  • Time zones, if anyone books from elsewhere.
  • Management. A way for you or your staff to see and edit the calendar.
  • Privacy. You are collecting names and contact details, so be clear about what you keep and why.

Off the shelf or built for you

If your rules are simple, a booking service will do and costs less. If your business has staff with different skills, services that combine, deposits, or must connect to other systems, a tailored one avoids bending your business around the tool.

I built a reservation and management system for a hair salon, with booking, customer accounts, stylist calendars and an owner’s panel, in three languages; its page describes what it covers. This site’s own “Book a free Zoom call” form is a small booking system as well.
