Should you build for iPhone or Android first?

Start with the platform where most of your first users are. Market share differs by country and by audience, so check yours rather than relying on global figures. Building both at once is worthwhile only when your audience is genuinely split.

Launching on one platform first keeps scope and cost down and lets you learn from real use. Choosing the wrong one wastes that advantage, so base the decision on evidence about your users.

What to look at

  • Where your users are. Platform shares vary widely between countries and between consumer and business audiences. Look at data for your market, or at what devices your existing website visitors use.
  • What you are building. Some product types and professional audiences lean toward one platform.
  • How you plan to earn. Willingness to pay for apps and subscriptions differs between audiences, and your revenue plan may favour one.
  • Your tools. If you use a cross-platform framework, building for both costs far less than two native apps.
  • Store rules and effort. Each store has its own review process and requirements.

A practical way to decide

  1. Find out what phones your first hundred users have, by asking or by checking website analytics where you have them.
  2. Launch on the larger group.
  3. Add the second platform when there is demand and the first version is stable.

A web version or progressive web app can serve the other group in the meantime, if the idea does not depend on native-only features.
